Patna: The commissioner of railway safety (CRS), eastern circle-Kolkata Suvomoy Mitra on Thursday concluded a two-day statutory inquiry in connection with the derailment of 23 coaches of the Anand Vihar-Kamakhya North East Express (12506) at Raghunathpur station near Buxar falling under the Danapur division of the East Central Railway at the Railway Officers’ Club in Khagaul.
Hundreds of railway staff and people in general having information about the accident deposed before the CRS inquiry committee. The CRS recorded the statement of each person who appeared before the inquiry committee and grilled the railway safety staff concerned for hours, the railway sources said.
In addition to other general people, pantry car and electrical staff of the ill-fated North East Express also appeared before the CRS inquiry committee and got their statements recorded, Danapur railway official said.
A preliminary railway report, however, found faults in tracks as major cause for the derailment. Five passengers were killed and 60 others injured in the accident. The railways had paid an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the next kin of the deceased while Rs 50,000 each was paid to the grievously injured passengers, sources said.
