NEW DELHI: Multiple explosions were heard in central Kyiv on Monday, accompanied by air raid sirens urging residents to seek shelter. This came after nearly a dozen people were injured in a Russian drone attack in southern Ukraine and a fire broke out at a major Russian power plant following a Ukrainian drone strike.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko took to social media, instructing residents to go to shelters immediately and informed that emergency services were dispatched to three districts of the capital. The head of Kyiv’s military administration reported that a Russian missile had caused damage to a residential building in the Pechersky district, with further details yet to be confirmed.
In recent days, Russia has intensified its air attacks on Kyiv, targeting critical infrastructure in response to Ukrainian bombings in Russian border regions.
Missile debris falls on buildings
Reports emerged of a three-story building in central Kyiv being severely damaged in a Russian missile attack on Monday morning, with the missile debris falling in three other districts of the city. Witnesses observed a column of smoke rising in the eastern part of the city as explosions reverberated across Kyiv.
The city’s military administration said that a multi-story non-residential building in the Pechersk district had sustained damage, with two individuals reported injured. Debris was also reported in the Solomyansky, Holosiyvsky, and Dnipro districts.
US Ambassador to Kyiv, Bridget Brink, confirmed that Russia had deployed hypersonic missiles in the attack on the Ukrainian capital, emphasizing the extensive nature of the assault.

In Russia, a fire broke out at the Novocherkassk power station in the Rostov region following Ukrainian drone attacks, prompting the temporary shutdown of two power units.

Earlier, an underground gas storage site in Ukraine was targeted in a Russian missile strike. Naftogaz, the state-run energy company, confirmed the attack but assured consumers that gas supplies remained unaffected, with repair work underway to address the damage.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy mentioned ongoing efforts to restore power in various regions, particularly highlighting challenges in Kharkiv. To counter energy shortages resulting from the attacks, Ukraine escalated electricity imports, suspended exports and implemented rolling blackouts to manage the situation.
Zelenskiy revealed that over 200,000 residents in Kharkiv were without stable power, necessitating strict power usage schedules in the city. The energy ministry stated that electricity imports were increased to compensate for the lost capacity following Russian attacks. Russia’s targeting of critical energy infrastructure across Ukraine has intensified, with ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of these attacks on the country’s power systems.
