Russian court jails Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza for 25 years for treason – Times of India

MOSCOW: A Moscow court on Monday convicted a top Kremlin enemy and sentenced him to 25 years in prison on charges of treason and defaming the Russian army.
Vladimir Kara-Murza, Jr., a prominent opposition activist who twice survived a poisoning attack on the Kremlin, has been behind bars since his arrest a year ago. He dismissed the charges against him as political and compared the judicial proceedings against him to a show trial during the regime of the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin,
The allegations against Kara-Murza stemmed from his March 15 speech to the Arizona House of Representatives, in which he condemned RussiaMilitary action in Ukraine while he was in custody prompted investigators to add charges of treason.
Russia adopted a law criminalizing spreading “false information” about its military on February 24, 2022, shortly after sending troops to Ukraine.
