Thane: The Naupada police have arrested a long-serving salesman of a local jeweller for allegedly stealing 1,600 gm gold worth Rs 1 crore.
Accused Rahul Mehta has been arrested in connection with the case, said Subhash Burse, the deputy commissioner of police (zone 1).
The accused was employed by the jeweller for several years, and he was entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding the valuables in the store’s safe.
The jeweller reported to the police that gold ornaments of nearly 1.6 kg were missing from his shop and he has also vanished by taking leave. The alleged theft came to light when another salesman who replaced the accused saw the discrepancy in the stock and as the owner trusted him, he didn’t doubt him, added Burse.
The Naupada police launched the probe and zeroed in on the accused who had till then switched off the cellphone and even his wife had filed a missing complaint with the police, to deceive the cops and the investigation.
The police on the basis of a technical probe found him to have visited various cities including Indore, several cities of Gujarat and then came to Mira Road.
The police then laid a trap when he came to meet one of his female friends in Mira Road, said Burse. “During the probe he told us that he used to sell the ornaments to other jewellers and would splurge the money on drinking and other vices,” said Burse
The police said that they have recovered nearly 900gm stolen ornaments worth Rs 68 lakh. The police did not clarify if they will initiate any legal action on the jewellers who were sold the stolen ornaments by the accused.
