Written and directed by Gunasekhar, Shakuntalam is a mythological drama based on folklore about Shakuntala, played by Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The film will release in five languages - Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi. The mythological romance drama, starring Samantha and Dev Mohan, is based on a play by Kalidasa.

Back in March, Samantha revealed that she had initially turned down Shakuntalam. However, she later admitted it was to ‘face her fears’ which had haunted her for the past three years. In an interview with TV9, Samantha shared, “The offer came to me when I had finished shooting for The Family Man 2. I had just played the character of Raji, which was different from Shakuntala in many ways. Shakuntala is a symbol of purity, innocence, grace and dignity. On the other hand, Raazi was about being gritty and real. I was not sure whether I could turn into Shakuntala at that point of time.

Samantha further mentioned that she signed the project later and decided to take it as an opportunity for herself. “In the past 3 years, I have lived in great fear. Shakuntala faced so many difficulties but she faced them all with dignity and poise. When I found out about it, I accepted the offer to face my fears. How I faced my fears in the last three years describes my growth as an actor,” she revealed.

Meanwhile, Samantha will next be seen in Citadel India opposite Varun Dhawan. She also has the romantic drama Kushi opposite Vijay Deverakonda in the pipeline.
