Thousands of people in Myanmar have been cut off from contact after a deadly cyclone battered the country’s west and neighboring Bangladesh.

Cyclone Mocha – one of the most powerful storms to hit the Bay of Bengal in more than a decade – made landfall on Sunday between Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh and Sittwe in Myanmar.

A comparison of satellite images collected after the storm with images taken on February 17 shows extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in Rakhine’s capital, Sittwe.

The deserted streets of the city were downed with power poles and still-standing trees were stripped of leaves.

The storm severely disrupted communications in Rakhine, making it difficult to ascertain the scale of its impact. Officials said more than 860 homes and 14 hospitals or clinics were damaged across Myanmar.

The storm also damaged Rohingya refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh, where nearly one million people live in 190,000 bamboo and tarpaulin shelters.

About 400,000 people were evacuated in Myanmar and Bangladesh before Cyclone Mocha’s landfall, as authorities and aid agencies scrambled to avoid heavy casualties.
