The Supreme Court reprimanded the Nagaland government as well as the central government. The court reprimanded and said that the central government is not ready to implement the constitution. In fact, the government did not implement the constitutional scheme of one-third reservation for women in the municipal elections in the northeastern state of Nagaland, due to which the court reprimanded both the governments.

reprimanded the central government

A bench of Supreme Court Justice SK Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said that the Center cannot get away with saying that it does not apply to tribal areas. The women of Nagaland actively participate in every aspect of life. The court said what are you doing. There is also your government. You cannot say here that there is someone else in the state. The Supreme Court told Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for the Centre, that the central government was not interested in implementing the Constitution. You take action against governments on small orders but why don’t you say anything where constitutional provision is not being followed.

State asked questions

The BJP has an alliance with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland. Nagaland’s Advocate General KN Balagopal said the state government was keen to bring a new law to satisfy the court. When he asked the court for time to take instructions from the state government, the court said that it had given several opportunities to the state government but it did nothing. The court said that you will be strict against those state governments which are not responsible to you. But your own state is violating the constitutional scheme and you don’t want to do anything. You can’t wash your hands of it.
