SGPC: SGPC says no to UCC as it ‘undermines Sikh identity’ | India News – Times of India

SGPC President talking to reporters after the meeting Harjinder Singh Dhami Said that the Committee has unanimously decided that there is no need for UCC within the country, as the Constitution itself upholds the principle of unity in diversity.
All Said that the UCC has created apprehensions among the minorities in the country as it has allegedly diluted their identity, uniqueness and principles.
Referring to the formation of a sub-committee of Sikh intellectuals, historians, scholars and legal experts to address concerns related to the UCC, Dhami said, “The committee acknowledges the potential threat posed by the UCC to minority communities.”
Emphasizing that the religious texts, teachings, principles, traditions, values, ethics, customs and independent identity of the Sikh community cannot be challenged or evaluated on the basis of any worldly law, he said, Hence, the Sikh community opposes the UCC.” Dhami said that the 21st Law Commission had also rejected the UCC, citing evidence that such laws lack practicality and are unnecessary.
Highlighting other decisions taken during the meeting, Dhami said that the SGPC would monitor cases related to Jagdish Tytler in the 1984 killing of three Sikhs at Delhi’s Pulbangash Gurdwara Sahib.
