Islamabad:

Pakistan-based Geo News reported that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said PTI vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi would lead the party in case of Khan’s disqualification by a court.

“If I am disqualified, Shah Mehmood Qureshi will run the party,” Imran Khan said at a meeting with journalists and lawyers at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore on Saturday.

According to Geo News, the PTI chief has been facing several cases ranging from corruption to terrorism since he was ousted from power in April last year.

Imran Khan was arrested on May 9 in the 190 million pound Al-Qadir Trust case by Rangers personnel in compliance with an arrest warrant from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The PTI chief was released after the Supreme Court declared his arrest illegal.

Imran Khan’s arrest on 9 May triggered violent protests across the country, with supporters vandalizing and setting fire to defense and public establishments across the country.

Following this, the top civilian and military-led high-level National Security Committee (NSC) vowed to prosecute the rioters under relevant laws, including the Army Act, according to Geo News.

Commenting on the mass exodus of leaders from his party over the May 9 vandalism, Mr Khan said the situation was about to change soon.

He said, “I will give a big surprise in the coming days.”

Imran Khan said that some leaders of the party are leaving the party under compulsion while some have been exposed.

Describing the youth as a great asset of his party, Khan said that the party ticket is their right and asserted that PTI will win the next general elections despite the departure of party leaders, Geo News reported.

He also called for a referendum to assess his party’s popularity among the public.
