Shinde Shocker drops Thackeray near danger mark in assembly as government numbers in tight spot

The Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra is facing an unprecedented crisis with Shiv Sena leader and state minister Eknath Shinde camping in a Surat hotel along with 11 party MLAs, calling on the BJP to oust Maharashtra’s development. There is a need to bridge the precise gap in the assembly. Aghadi alliance with power.

Sources said more MLAs are likely to join ShindeA day later, at a five-star hotel in Surat, who is reportedly unhappy with the party leadership Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress Alliance BJP has suffered a setback in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. Despite falling short in numbers, the opposition BJP was able to get its ‘extra’ contestant elected as MLC, defeating the first preference candidate of the Congress.

After the MLC election results, the NCP accused the BJP of horse-trading and “working secret agreements”, while former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the results exposed unrest among the ruling coalition’s legislators.

The MLC election result has proved to be the second major setback for the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance after the Rajya Sabha elections. Under similar circumstances, the BJP got three Rajya Sabha seats while the ruling alliance secured three, one each for the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress, while the other Shiv Sena candidate lost.

As the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress race to fight their latest crisis, News18.com takes a look at the current numbers in the Maharashtra Assembly and how the Uddhav Thackeray government is stacked.

Before Rajya Sabha elections: Before June 10, the Uddhav Thackeray government had the support of 170 MLAs in the 288-member assembly.

After Rajya Sabha elections: Cross-voting against another Shiv Sena candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections meant that the party’s support fell from 171 to 162 MLAs.

After MLC election The BJP was successful in getting an additional candidate elected in the Legislative Council election at the expense of the Congress. Cross-voting again hit the MVA alliance hard as it reduced the turnout of legislators in their favor to 151.

Magic Mark: The total strength of the assembly stands at 288, but with the death of Shiv Sena’s Ramesh Latte and jailed NCP MLAs Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Melak, the effective strength has gone up to 285. This makes 143 the majority mark.

Current Number: The Uddhav Thackeray government is eight clear of the majority mark, while the BJP with the implied support of 134 MLAs needs nine more to touch the magic figure and topple the government.

If the BJP manages to garner the support of the Eknath Shinde camp, whose numbers are speculated to increase, Maharashtra could enter another phase of political uncertainty after the 2019 assembly elections.
