Snap APAC AR Day: How India is contributing to Snapchat’s global growth – Times of India

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, held its first APAC AR Day in India where the leadership talked about the opportunities provided by the Augmented Reality (AR) technology of the app and hailed an increasing number of Indian AR creator community. The event also saw the company’s top executives talk about how local developers are helping the company grow.
The event witnessed a surprise visit by Evan Spiegel, Snap CEO and Co-Founder, who engaged in a fireside chat with Snap APAC president Ajit Mohan.
Spiegel, who is on a three-day trip to India, said that as consumers and brands are adopting AR globally, India’s booming creative talent pool is helping the company maximise this ‘transformative technology.’
“I love the energy of the young and vibrant Indian developer community. With over 200 million Snapchatters in India, we’re seeing more and more creators, developers and brands tap into our community’s passion for augmented reality experiences. We’re excited to be building the future with such incredible local talent,” said Spiegel.
Indian developers collaborate with brands
Meanwhile, Mohan, in his keynote, said that the strength of India’s thriving AR creator and developer community is helping them collaborate with brand partners. He said India is one of the most important countries globally.
“Thanks to the innovation and creativity of these incredibly talented AR developers and creators, Snapchatters around the world are able to engage with immersive AR experiences which bring everyday moments to life,” Mohan added.
He said that Snapchat is committed to “empowering these creators, offering monetisation avenues and providing tools to support their creative aspirations.” He noted that users interact wit AR lenses 50 million times a month and 85% of Snapchatters use AR to celebrate Diwali.
Snapchat by the numbers
According to the company, over 250 million people are engaging with AR on Snapchat daily on average and Indian AR developers are building strong businesses on the platform. The Snap AR creator community in India grew by 60% in 2022 and is expected to continue to grow in 2024 as well.
In August this year, Snap launched the Lens Creator Rewards program to reward for building top-performing Lenses on Snapchat. According to Jeremy Voss, Snap’s director of product, over half of creators who received rewards are from India.
In India, 95% of Gen Z individuals express a keen interest in using AR for shopping, with 73% believing that AR experiences provide a more personal touch.
Moreover, globally, AR demonstrates an impressive 94% higher conversion rate when consumers interact with products, resulting in a 25% decrease in return rates. Snapchat is also gearing up to launch special Diwali-themed AR Lenses.
