Android users need to back up their WhatsApp chats to the cloud before using WhatsApp chats on any other device. But it won’t be needed very soon.

WhatsApp chats are important for everyone, especially for those who change phones frequently. The messaging app allows users to back up their chats via Google Drive, so you can effortlessly retrieve all chats on a new Android phone without any issues.

But without a Google account, you cannot avail this support, which may soon become optional as WhatsApp has started testing its local chat migration feature with select beta users. According to WABetainfo the feature is available on Android beta version 2.23.9.19.

As per the details available, WhatsApp will allow you to transfer chats from one Android to another without backing them up on Google Drive. Instead, all you have to do is sign in to your account on the new phone, scan a QR code, and initiate the chat transfer process. The only option is to use a disc to transfer the chats but it’s not the easiest or fastest.

First you’ll need to back up previous chats manually to Drive, and then make sure WhatsApp has access to your media device and storage on the new phone. Only then, you will be able to retrieve the backed up chats, and restoring them takes time. The feature most likely uses the Wi-Fi Direct option to deliver faster transfer of chats. And the transfer option is only supposed to work between two Android phones. For those switching to other platforms such as iOS, they need to use the more detailed transfer tools provided by WhatsApp.

With the local transfer feature, people who live in remote parts of the country can easily transfer their WhatsApp chats. It is also important for WhatsApp to have an in-house transfer option, as WhatsApp chats backed up to Google Drive are not protected by end-to-end encryption by default. Expect the new local chat transfer option to be publicly released in the coming months.
