Special CBI court sends fake CBI director to 3 years in jail | Mumbai News – Times of India

Mumbai: A special CBI court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a man to three years of rigorous imprisonment for impersonating as the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2011 to cheat and extort a businessman of Rs 50 lakh.
Among the convicted accused, one of Ashwini Kumar Sharma’s other victims is actor and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan. A money laundering case related to this incident is pending before the special PMLA court.
On Tuesday, Sharma appeared before the special CBI judge VP Desai via video conference from Panipat, Haryana, as he suffers from 83% physical disability following an accident in 2020. On Monday, the Bombay High Court allowed him permission to appear through video conference. He had challenged the non-bailable warrant issued by the trial court after he failed to appear during the last hearing on December 29.
Sharma was found guilty on charges under the Indian Penal Code related to cheating and criminal conspiracy, as well as under the Prevention of Corruption Act for impersonating public servants to intentionally dupe the complainant. In a separate judgment in the same case in 2022, the court found Sharma’s co-accused, Rajesh Ranjan, guilty of being part of the conspiracy and sentenced him to three years in jail. The trial was separated after Sharma’s accident.
In 2022, special judge A.S. Sayyad began his judgment with, “This is a famous case of fake CBI senior officers wherein two persons allegedly impersonated themselves as CBI officers and, for not taking action against the complainant, not only extorted Rs 50 lakh from him but also from several other persons in other matters as well.”
