State set to prepare new energy policy | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State government is all set to explore the possibility of using hydrogen as fuel. It also has plans to explore the innovative solar power generation models, which includes the usage of solar panels on vehicles. With these objectives and much more, the state government has started working on a new power policy. A committee for preparing the draft policy has already been set up.
“The drastic developments in science and technology have brought significant changes in the power sector. Focus on renewable and eco-friendly energy is the need of the hour. Steps to increase the generation of solar power in view of the increasing number of electric vehicles, installation of solar panels in government land and buildings, usage of hydrogen as fuel, installation of solar panels on vehicles and reduction of carbon foot- print demand a detailed study,” said a government order regarding the setting up of an 18- member committee for the preparation of the draft plan.
The draft policy would also make suggestions on the changes to be made in the power generation, transmission and distribution sectors. Besides suggesting new ideas in the energy sector, it would investigate the measures to be adopted to enhance energy conservation activities, promotion of electric vehicle policy and changes in building rules to promote the construction of energy efficient buildings.
While the electric vehicle policy would define the criteria to be followed by the state government for the promotion, including financial incentives, of electric vehicles, the policy would also look into the possibility of adopting induction charging facility for electric vehicles, a technology touted as the bridge to the future. All departments concerned have been asked to prepare individual reports to be considered by the committee and submit the same before February 15.
