Senior railway officials, including Danapur divisional railway manager Jayant Kumar Choudhary, are part of the committee that is conducting the inquiry at Railway Officers’ Club in Khagaul.
The inquiry began at 9.30am with listing of names of the concerned railway employees to record their statements before the committee and continued till 6pm on the day. Similarly, it will continue on Thursday as well from 9.30am-6pm.
Railways has also asked people in general, having any information about the accident, to depose before the CRS or send their written statements to his office located at 14, Strand Road, 12th Floor, Kolkata-700001, the CPRO said, adding many were expected to depose on Thursday.
Among the witnesses who were asked to turn up before the inquiry committee were loco pilot Bipin Kumar Sinha, assistant loco pilot Rajesh Kumar and pointsman Vishal Kumar, besides Raghunathpur station master Nityanand Kumar and gateman Nand Kishore Singh, railway sources said. On the day, the guard of the ill-fated train, its manager Vijay Kumar and bed roll staff of AC coaches, besides signal and engineering staff appeared before the CRS to record their statements, added the sources.
Though a preliminary railway report found faults in tracks as immediate cause of the derailment of all 23 coaches, including locomotive, the CRS inquiry would look into every possible angle, which could have caused the mishap of such a great magnitude. Lucky for the railways, the death toll was restricted to five passengers, even as 59 others were injured in the accident, said a Danapur railway official.
