'Stay clear': Train carrying hazardous materials derails in US

A small forest fire broke out due to the derailment

A freight train carrying hazardous materials reportedly derailed in the state of Maine.

The Rockwood, Maine Fire and Rescue was moved Facebook on Saturday and wrote, “Train derailment with fire north of Rockwood, hazardous materials please stay clear!”

In another post, the fire and rescue team posted a picture of a derailed train and a fire burning in a snow-covered forest.

According to CBSAccording to railroad officials and state officials, no hazardous materials caught fire.

A spokesperson for Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (CPKC) told CBS News that a track washout caused the train to derail around 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time.

“Track washout” is a common occurrence after heavy rain, it washes away the ballast and road under the track.

The Maine Forest Service (MFS) said in a news release that “melting snow and debris build-up” may have caused the washout.

The MFS said a small forest fire broke out due to the derailment, which was later brought under control. Three railroad workers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
