The Supreme Court has lifted the ban on the film The Kerala Story in West Bengal. The Mamata Banerjee government had banned the film fearing law and order situation in the state. During the hearing on this on Thursday, the Supreme Court said – It is the responsibility of the state government to maintain law and order. It is not right for the government to ban the film under the guise of this. If this happens then all the films will come under this purview.

The CJI asked the makers to write this line in the disclaimer of the film – The number of people who changed religion is 32000 or something, there is no authentic data for this fact. The story of the film is based on a fictional subject. This disclaimer should be added on May 20, 2023 before 5 pm.

The film was banned by the government in West Bengal while theater honors in Tamil Nadu banned it. The Calcutta and Madras High Courts refused to interfere in the matter. The Supreme Court will now hear the decision of both these High Courts on July 18 after the summer vacation.

The government had told the allegations of shadow ban as a lie.
The Tamil Nadu government had also denied the allegations of shadow banning of filmmakers. The government said that the film was released in 19 multiplexes and the film makers do not have any written proof that the film screening has been stopped by the government.

Muslim organizations had demonstrated in Tamil Nadu
On May 5, Muslim organizations protested against the Kerala story at about 20 places. This was followed by protests in Chennai on 6 May and again in Coimbatore the next day. A total of nine cases were registered against the protesters, five in Chennai and four in Coimbatore.

Why the demand to ban The Kerala Story?
The film ‘The Kerala Story’ is based on the conversion of girls from different communities to Islam and their induction into ISIS. At the same time, Muslim organizations, human rights activists and some political parties are calling this film defamatory of Islam and Kerala.

Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor had tweeted about the film on 30 April. While sharing the poster of the film, he wrote, ‘This may be your Kerala story, this is not our Kerala story.’
