Suchitra Krishnamoorthi calls out ‘Orry culture’ in B-town: It’s a ticketed zoo, more the bling, higher the footfalls. | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has raised concerns about what she terms as the ‘Orry culture‘ currently prevailing in the film industry.
Krishnamoorthi, in a social media post, expressed her views, stating that Bollywood has transformed into a “ticketed zoo,” where the emphasis on opulence rather than talent, directly correlates with popularity. In a detailed post, she highlighted the trend of flaunting designer labels as a status symbol, describing it as an act that reflects insecurity and a lack of individuality, ultimately labelling it as “cowardice.”

In her note, she wrote, “An artist or an individual of calibre is a brand by themselves.

Mastery and excellence in their field of work is the only brands an artist needs to aspire to. To flaunt other people’s labels that reek of a price tag, to do it because its a status symbol and its what the other rich do in my view reeks of insecurity and a lack of individuality. Cowardice.”
She then shared an example of a former personal trainer who had resorted to taking loans to purchase designer bags to match the lifestyle of her celebrity clientele. Upon questioning the trainer about indulging in lifestyle choices, she revealed that the trainer had shifted her perspective because her son, influenced by the #Orry culture.
Krishnamoorthi quoted the trainer who told her, “I don’t want him to get into this #Orry culture – it’s dangerous. He has to do something on his own. He has to realize that just posting photos with celebrities does’nt make him one.”

The actress emphasized the need for a shift in mindset, not only among individuals but also within mainstream media. She wrote, “And of how irresponsible our mainstream media has also become, that propagates this flamboyant extravagance circus( all paid of course) where they chose to highlight the price of an Isha Ambanis or Alia Bhatts dress rather than the achievements of an olympian or social worker or even a self-made hard-working entrepreneur. Its a ticketed zoo. The more the bling, the higher the footfalls. Merit be damned.”

Krishnamoorthi concluded her post by calling for a comprehensive social, cultural, and economic mindset reset, asserting that the responsibility lies with the media to drive this change. She urged for a shift in narrative towards recognizing merit over materialism, advocating for a more responsible and balanced portrayal of success and accomplishment in the public eye.
