The Supreme Court on Friday said it will hear on October 10 the cross-petitions of Google and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) challenging an appellate tribunal’s decision in a case related to Google’s alleged anti-competitive practices in Android mobile devices. . Earlier, the NCLAT in its 189-page order had upheld six CCI directions, including a direction asking Google to allow users to choose their default search engine during initial device setup, and another It clarified that OEMs cannot be forced to pre-install a bunch of apps. The appellate tribunal asked Google to implement the direction and deposit the amount in 30 days.

The Appellate Tribunal said, “the impugned order of the Commission except for the four directions issued is upheld” and held that Google is “thus not entitled to any relief other than setting aside the aforesaid four directions”. It added, “The appellant (Google) is permitted to deposit the amount of penalty (after adjusting the amount of 10 per cent of the penalty amount deposited under the order dated January 4, 2023) within a period of 30 days from today ”
