Bhubaneswar/Dhenkanal: A blast furnace accident Bye Steel’s Meramandali unit in Dhenkanal district injured 18 workers on Tuesday, even as officials launched an internal probe to find leakage of hot steam from the furnace during a routine inspection. The Directorate of Factories and Broilers has initiated an investigation while the company has also initiated an internal investigation.
N Thirumala Naik, director of factories and broilers, said a deputy director rank officer is leading the probe to find out the possible lapses that are causing the steam leak. He said that the team has already visited the spot.
“We are working closely with the relevant authorities on the ground and have launched an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident,” Tata said in a statement.
Tata Steel said the injured workers were taken in company ambulances as a precautionary measure to the Occupational Health Center in the plant premises and then to Cuttack for further treatment, Tata Steel said.
The company said that all emergency protocol services have been activated and the area has been cordoned off following the accident. “The company is ensuring all necessary information and assistance is provided to the families of the affected personnel,” the company said.
Tata Steel had acquired Meramandali Steel Works from Bhushan Steel in 2018. The 5.6 MT per annum plant is currently Tata’s largest plant in Odisha and has two blast furnaces. In another plant of Tata Group Kalinga Nagar Jajpur district produces 3 metric tons of steel per year.
