Tata Steel inks pact with Germany’s SMS Group – Times of India

New Delhi: Tata Steel The steelmaker said in a statement it signed an agreement Wednesday with Germany’s SMS Group to collaborate on a technology that aims to cut carbon emissions from the steelmaking process by more than 50%.
According to the World Steel Association, steel production generates up to 9% of global carbon emissions, and producers around the world are investing in technology that can help reduce their share of pollution.
Both the companies will hold technical discussions and demonstrate the decarbonization technology developed by SMS Group in a blast furnace at Tata’s Jamshedpur plant in eastern India as part of the agreement. Bye Steele said.
The objective of the demonstration will be to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50% from the baseline operation of the blast furnace.
Tata Steel Chief Executive Officer TV Narendran said, “India being the second largest steel producer in the world imposes a huge responsibility on large manufacturers like Tata Steel to lead the country’s decarbonisation journey.”
The company said it has set a target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045.
