Teen convicted and fined for ganja consumption in public in Thane | Thane News – Times of India

THANE: A recent verdict by a Thane magistrate court has found an 18-year-old boy guilty of consuming ganja in public and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on him. The decision, delivered by Magistrate GS Bora, was based on violations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) of 1985.
The incident took place on October 15, 2023, when patrolling officers in Bhayander apprehended the accused near the New Golden Nest complex at approximately 1.30am.He was caught in the act of consuming ganja and was subsequently charged under sections 27 and 8(c) of the NDPS Act.
During the recent court hearing, the accused admitted to the crime, which led to his liability for punishment as stipulated under the NDPS Act. The magistrate emphasized the seriousness of consuming narcotic substances and expressed concerns about the potential for repeat offenses if the accused went unpunished. As a result, the magistrate ordered a fine of Rs 3000, with a default penalty of five days in police custody.
Furthermore, the judge instructed law enforcement to dispose of the seized ganja.
