The US Coast Guard is probing the cause of an undersea explosion of a tourist submarine that killed all five people on board while diving into the century-old wreck of the Titanic, officials said Sunday.

The announcement comes a day after Canada’s Transportation Safety Board said it was conducting its own investigation into the Titan detonation, which has raised questions about the unregulated nature of such operations.

“My primary goal is to prevent a similar incident by making necessary recommendations to enhance maritime domain security around the world,” Captain Jason Neubauer, the Coast Guard’s chief investigator, told a news conference in Boston.

Neubauer said the Coast Guard launched a marine board investigation on Friday, and is working with the FBI to recover evidence, including a wreck site on the ocean floor about 1,600 feet (488 meters) off the bow of the ocean. But rescue operations are also included. The wreckage of the Titanic, approximately 2-1/2 miles (4 km) below the surface.

The findings will be shared with the International Maritime Organization and other groups “to help improve the security framework for submarine operations around the world,” Neubauer said.

He said the Coast Guard is in contact with the families of the five killed, and that investigators are “taking all precautions at the site” in case we do find any human remains.
