The world recognizes India’s capabilities, potential in space technology: Jitendra Singh

New Delhi: Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on Thursday said that the world has started acknowledging India’s capabilities and its potential in space technology, with the country having 140 space startups.

Addressing the inaugural session of the G20 fourth edition of the Space Economy Leaders Meeting (SELM), the minister said, this has been possible due to the opening up of India’s space sector to private players.

The minister highlighted that after the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US, India and the US have agreed to cooperate on space related activities. As a result, India will participate in the US-led Artemis program to explore the Moon and other celestial bodies. The agreement will pave the way for easing restrictions on the import of critical technologies in the space sector.

Singh said global cooperation and alliances are important in view of the growing ambition of human beings to explore outer space. An alliance of responsible space traveling nations is the need of the hour to increase the share of space economy in the global economy.

“The future development of humanity lies in our collective ability to responsibly harness, mobilize resources and use space technology to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and improve the lives of the common man,” Singh said. “As space technology integrates various pillars of the economy under one umbrella.” Investments made here will have a multiplier effect on the overall development of countries and economies.”
