They looked nervous: Indian-origin taxi drivers driving Prince Harry and Meghan amid ‘car chase’

by India Today World Desk: Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, experienced a “near-disastrous car chase” on Tuesday, his spokesman said. A spokesman for the couple said that Harry and Meghan were being followed by paparazzi for two hours after leaving the event.

However, an Indian-American cab driver who drove the two for 10 minutes said such a claim could be “exaggerated”, according to a Washington Post report.

Sukhcharan Singh, an Indian-American cab driver, said that on Tuesday night, when he was on 67th Street, he was greeted by a security guard and then Prince Harry and his wife got into his cab.

“We got blocked by a garbage truck, and all of a sudden the paparazzi came and started taking pictures,” he said.

‘They looked nervous’

“They were nice guys, they looked nervous. I think they were being followed all day or something. They were quite nervous,” Singh told Sky News.

According to a report in The Washington Post, Singh picked up Harry, Meghan, her mother and a security guard outside the New York City Police Department’s 19th precinct around 11 pm on Tuesday.

“Singh estimated that the entire trip lasted 10 minutes, and said he got the impression from the group that he had already been followed by paparazzi before he entered his car,” the report said.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) later said they assisted the private security team guarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “There were a number of photographers who found their transportation challenging,” it said.

Police, however, said that the couple “arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries or arrests.”

Prince Harry has been a vocal critic of press intrusion as he has often blamed the paparazzi for the death of his mother, Princess Diana. She was killed when her limousine crashed in Paris in 1997 when she got away from chasing paparazzi.

Prince Harry’s disdain for the press is one of the reasons he and his wife, Meghan, moved from Britain to the United States.
