Maruthur Gopalan Ramachandran, widely recognised as MGR, was an Indian actor, politician and philanthropist. MGR made his film debut in 1936, appearing in the movie Sathi Leelavathi, directed by Ellis R Dungan. Primarily cast in romance or action genres, Ramachandran achieved his breakthrough with the 1950 film written by M Karunanidhi. He swiftly gained popularity with the 1954 film Malaikkallan.

Coming to his off-screen persona, MGR doesn’t assert authority or intimidate anyone, he maintains a polite presence. However, his mere presence commands attention and respect, causing the atmosphere to become silent. Everyone, including co-stars, addressed him respectfully as Chinnavar and Vathiaar, with many being hesitant to directly address him by his name.

However, actress Bhanumathi was the only person who used to address MGR as Mr MG Ramachandran in front of many people, despite fellow actors being apprehensive about interacting with MGR. Despite Bhanumathi calling MGR by name, he continued to treat her with the utmost respect and engaged with her in a natural and unassuming manner, as he always did.

Bhanumathi and MG Ramachandran were two of the most accomplished actors in Tamil cinema, leaving behind a timeless legacy of classic films that continue to entertain audiences for generations. Despite their remarkable on-screen chemistry, there was a moment of tension between them during the shooting of Nadodi Mannan. Amid MGR reshooting a scene multiple times, Bhanumathi became frustrated and disagreed with him.

According to News 18, Bhanumathi angrily inquired how much longer MGR would take to complete a scene during the shooting of Nadodi Mannan. She was so frustrated that she suggested replacing her with someone else for the film. The actress, known for her role in Samrat Ashok, had decided to withdraw from the project altogether.

Bhanumathi’s behaviour came as a surprise to everyone on the sets, as no one had expected her to react in such a manner. MGR, too, was taken aback by Bhanumathi’s harsh criticism, as he was not accustomed to other actors speaking against him. Feeling insulted by her remarks, he resolved to settle the score with Bhanumathi.
