Three Trinamool Congress workers, including a panchayat member, were attacked and killed on Thursday at Canning in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. He was on his way to attend a meeting on preparations for the party’s Martyrs’ Day rally to be held in Kolkata on July 21.

Unknown assailants stopped Trinamool Congress member Swapan Manjhi of Gopalpur gram panchayat and local booth presidents of the party Bhootnath Pramanik and Jhantu Halda near Pier Park area. They first attacked Swapan Manjhi with a deadly attack and then followed and killed the other two.

Empty cartridges and a motorcycle have been recovered from the spot. The bodies were sent for postmortem.

The killing of three local leaders caused a wave of shock in the political circles. Soukat Mulla, Trinamool Congress MLA from Canning Purba, said that these were well-planned killings. He accused the BJP. Some TMC leaders said that the supporters of Socialist Unity Center of India (Communist) are behind this crime. Trinamool Congress MLA from Canning West Paresh Ram Das said that Swapna Manjhi had told him a few days ago that his life was in danger.

The relatives of the deceased suspected personal enmity behind the murder. The state BJP leadership blamed factionalism in the Trinamool Congress. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that police in West Bengal is engaged in providing security to the Chief Minister and such incidents are on the rise.

On July 4, a youth was killed allegedly trying to collect country-made bombs in an open field at Domkal in Murshidabad district.
