Tibetans Wrap Up Cricket Tournament In Gajapati | Bhubaneswar News – Times of India

Berhampur: The Tibetans are indifferent towards cricket in their homeland. However, a young generation of Tibetans in exile, settled in Gajapati’s Chandragiri, have developed a passion for the sport.
In light of this, the Tibetan settlement office in the district organised a 10-day cricket tournament at Chandragiri, which concluded on Wednesday.
“We decided to hold a 10-day cricket tournament for the first time in the name of Kaling Veer Biju Patnaik, former chief minister in the state, who allowed the Tibetans to settle in Gajapati district,” said Khenpo Pema Tenphell, chief administrator, Chandragiri Tibetan settlement.
“As many as 12 teams, including a team of Tibetans, participated in the tournament. A cash prize of Rs 20,000 along with a trophy was presented to the winning team in a brief function held after the tournament,” he added.
Khenpo said that in the coming years, more teams would be invited to take part in the tournmament.
The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibet, has instructed the Tibetans in exile to maintain cordial relationships with locals.
“We hope this initiative is to further improve and strengthen relations between the local people and Tibetan refugees in Chandragiri area,” he added.
