Tighten up GST registration process: Finance Minister – Times of India

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked to further strengthen the indirect tax department on friday GST Registration process, use of technology to prevent fake entities in the ecosystem.
FM, who chaired a review meeting with Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra and CBIC Chairman Vivek Johri called for a nationwide campaign to explain the special drive to weed out fake entities. Sitharaman was told that 11,140 are fake Registration have been detected and action has been initiated against them. The Finance Minister was also informed about the modus operandi being adopted to create fake entities including identity theft.
Sitharaman noted the existing measures being taken by the Finance Ministry at the time of registration in high-risk cases, such as OTP-based verification of Aadhaar and the pilot of biometric-based Aadhaar authentication. Malhotra and Johri apprised the Finance Minister about the tools being used to tackle the issue of fake entities, including artificial intelligence and machine learning.
