In the latest attempt by a social media firm to take advantage of the turmoil Twitter has been in since Elon Musk bought it last year, Chinese short-video app TikTok is allowing users to make text-only posts.

The move, announced on Monday, will allow TikTok users to choose from a variety of backgrounds for their text posts, which may feature hashtags and allow people to tag other users.

Posts that look similar to Instagram Stories have a 1,000-character limit, according to tech news website The Verge.

Meta Platforms chief executive Mark Zuckerberg launched Threads in July, another text-only application that could pose a threat to Elon Musk’s Twitter.

Elon Musk on Monday changed Twitter’s name to X and ditched the iconic blue bird logo in its effort to build “one everything app”.
