He was later taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. A police officer said, “We are looking into the matter. The body has been sent for post-mortem.”

A Trinamool Congress candidate for the panchayat elections in West Bengal’s Malda district was lynched, with the party pointing fingers at the Congress. Police said TMC candidate Mustafa Shaikh was on his way home in the afternoon when unidentified miscreants attacked and thrashed him in Sujapur area.

He was later taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. “We are looking into the matter. The body has been sent for postmortem, said a police officer.

According to state minister Sabina Yasmin, former TMC workers who joined Congress after being denied ticket were behind the attack on Shaikh. “They killed our official candidate in revenge,” he said. We have asked the police to take action,” he told reporters in Malda.

TMC workers staged a sit-in in the area demanding the arrest of the culprits. The district Congress leadership denied the allegations.

“The allegations leveled against us are baseless. The murder is due to infighting in TMC. A Congress leader said, “It has nothing to do with us.” Malda, a minority-dominated district, is considered a Congress bastion.

At least six people were killed and several injured in different parts of the state in widespread violence over the filing of nominations for the three-tier panchayat elections to be held on July 8.
