Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas has questioned the makers of The Kerala Story over their old claim that 32,000 women from Kerala joined ISIS.

Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas has reacted to the ongoing controversy surrounding The Kerala Story. Though Tovino said he has not yet seen the Adah Sharma-starrer film, he did watch its trailer, the original narrative of which claimed that 32,000 girls from Kerala had gone missing and joined the terrorist group ISIS.

“And then they [the makers] Changed it myself from 32,000 to 3. What does it mean?

“As far as I know there are 35 million people in Kerala and with these three incidents nobody can normalize it. I will not deny that this happened in Kerala. could be possible. I don’t know it personally but I have read it in the news. What we see today is not fact, it is just opinion. We see the same news in five different versions on five different channels… So, I will not deny the fact that it happened. But three out of 35 million cannot be generalized and misinformation is too bad,” Tovino said.

The Kerala Story is facing backlash from a section of political parties and groups who have claimed that the film is not based on facts, and propagates hatred against the Muslim community.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced a ban on The Kerala Story in the state. The film was released in theaters on 5 May amidst huge controversy and several petitions challenging its release. Banerjee’s announcement comes a day after multiplexes in Tamil Nadu stopped screening The Kerala Story following protests in some cities, including Chennai.

Despite protests and demands for a ban, The Kerala Story is doing exceptionally well at the box office. It is all set to cross the Rs 50 crore mark in just five days. Despite not having a mainstream star cast, the film earned over Rs 35 crore in its opening weekend.
