Tragic Death of BDS Student in Thiruvananthapuram | Rock Fall Incident | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: A 26-year-old BDS student was killed on Tuesday as a huge rock fell on him from a truck while he was travelling on his two-wheeler at Vizhinjam.
The deceased has been identified by police as Anandhu B Ajikumar of Kanjiramvila Veedu near Mukkola at Vizhinjam.
The deceased was travelling from Mukkola to Balaramapuram when a rock slipped out of the truck, which was coming from the opposite direction, and fell on him.Anandhu was soon rushed to NIMS hospital with serious injuries, however he later succumbed to the injuries.
“The rock weighing approximately 50 kg fell on his chest. According to the postmortem report, his internal organs suffered severe damage in the force, and that was the cause of death,” said police.
Police have arrested truck driver Jithin, 32, an Ottashekharamangalam native, over the incident. He was released on station bail after registering a case under sections of IPC 304-A for causing death by negligence and 279 for rash driving.
The truck was carrying construction rocks to Vizhinjam international seaport from Tamil Nadu and the incident took place when the truck was moving from Manali to Mulloor at 8am. Meanwhile, the state human rights commission registered a case voluntarily and directed the district collector and police chief to submit a detailed report on the incident in 10 days.
The incident sparked outrage among the locals as they staged a sit-in protest at the entrance of the port. They only dispersed after the police assured that a meeting would be arranged with the officials concerned. The protestors demanded the district administration take measures for the speedy completion of the road that leads to the port and the rocks should be transported through the new road. Hundreds of trucks, carrying huge rocks for the port construction, travel via the busy route every day.
The deceased was a fourth year BDS student of NIMS hospital. His body has been sent to relatives after postmortem and inquest proceedings at the medical college hospital.
