Tripura bypolls: Abhishek Banerjee’s visit gave a big blow to TMC

This is the big semi-final before the 2023 assembly elections. 22 candidates, including Chief Minister Manik Saha, will be in the fray on June 23 for bypolls to four assembly constituencies in Tripura – Agartala, Town Bardowali, Soorma and Jubrajnagar.

Manik Saha, who replaced Biplab Deb as chief minister last month, will face his first direct election from Town Bordowali. Congress has fielded its heavyweight leader Ashish Kumar Saha in this constituency and the Left Front candidate is Raghunath Sarkar of all. India Forward Block.

Congress candidate and former state minister Sudip Roy Burman has been pitted against BJP candidate Ashok Sinha and Left Front candidate Krishna Majumdar in Agartala.

In the Soorma constituency of Dhalai district, there is a contest between Anjan Das of Left Front, Swapna Das Paul of BJP and Baburam Satnami of Tipra Motha, a regional party led by royal descendant Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.

The Jubrajnagar constituency, considered a traditional Left stronghold, will see a contest between BJP candidate Malina Debnath and CPI(M)’s Shailendra Chandra Nath.

The bypoll, the results of which will be known on June 26, is crucial for the Trinamool Congress, which is trying to expand its footprint in the northeastern state. On June 14, senior party leader Abhishek Banerjee is set to hold a roadshow from Gandhighat to GB Bazar, and will also be back in the state on June 20. Party Supremo and CM of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Two meetings are also expected in the state ahead of the bypolls.

“Those who want to end the misgovernance should vote for the BJP and it has been seen that the Congress cannot do anything. People of Tripura have seen Left, now they will give chance to TMC,” tweeted TMC general secretary Kunal Ghosh.

Altogether 1,88,854 voters can exercise their franchise in the by-elections to be held in all the four seats. The bypoll has been necessitated due to the death of CPI(M) MLA Ramendra Chandra Debnath (Jubrajnagar) and resignations of Roy Burman (Agartala) and Ashish Saha (Town Bardowali). Moreover, the Soorma seat fell vacant after the Speaker of the Assembly disqualified BJP MLA Ashish Das.
