Tripura polls: CEO issues notices to BJP, Congress, CPM over tweets seeking votes on polling day

Tripura’s Chief Electoral Officer has sought clarifications and corrective action from state presidents of Congress, CPI(M) and BJP and national general secretary of the saffron party by 5 pm on Friday.

Tripura’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) has issued notices to the state presidents of Congress, CPI(M) and BJP as well as the national general secretary of the saffron party. People vote for him.

In one of the total four notices issued, the parties were asked to submit their clarifications by 5 pm on Friday and were also directed to take corrective action at the earliest.

In the notice seen by News18, the CEO said that Section 126 (1) (b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 prohibits display of any election material by means of cinematograph, television or other similar equipment in the polling area. A period of 48 hours ending with the last hour of polling in a polling area.

Further, sub-section (3) of section 126 defines ‘election material’ as any matter intended or calculated to influence or influence the result of an election.

The four notices cited tweets of each party that violated the rules.

The Tripura unit of the Congress appealed to ‘Vote for Congress’ with a tweet from the handle ‘Tripura Congress’ at 11.42 am on Thursday. The notice quoted the tweet as saying.

BJP tweeted a similar post at 9:50 am. Another notice said, “The tweet is in the form of a picture with the following message: Unnao Tripura Shrestho Tripura Vote for BJP.”

Tripura BJP handle tweeted at 8 am. The notice states, “A video clip followed by a tweet reads: For a secure and bright future, vote for BJP.”

In a notice to the CPI(M) state president, the CEO said the appeal for votes against a particular party/alliance was tweeted from the main handle on Wednesday at 8:33 pm. “The tweet followed by a video clip read: Under BJP-IPFT rule, Tripura is on the brink of collapse in all aspects – financial, social, cultural and political, defeat BJP, elect a pro-people government,” Said notice.

In each of the notices, the CEOs stated that the tweet concerned was taken as being in violation of Section 126(1)(b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Section 126 (2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 provides that any person who contravenes the provisions of sub-section (1) shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both. It is possible ,

Tripura is the first northeastern state to go to the polls this year. After this, polling will be held in Meghalaya and Nagaland on February 27 and the counting of votes will take place on March 2.
