Trump: Trump accuser tells jury: ‘He raped me whether I screamed or not’ – Times of India

New York: E Jean Carrolla writer is accusing Donald Trump of raping her in the mid-1990s, pushed back during cross-examination on Thursday, saying: “He raped me whether I screamed or not.”
When asked by Trump’s attorney why she did not scream during the alleged assault, Carroll said she was nervous and “not one to scream” in nature.
“People always ask, ‘Why didn’t you shout?’ It silences women,” Carroll told attorney Joe Tacopina on the third day of hearings in the civil case against the former US president in Manhattan federal court.
She vehemently denied Tacopina’s suggestion that she waited more than two decades to come forward about their encounter. Trump to sell more copies of his 2019 memoir in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store.
Carroll, 79, said she felt compelled to go public after rape allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein in 2017 prompted many other women to share their accounts of sexual assault.
“It made me realize that staying silent doesn’t work,” Carroll said.
“Woman after woman stood up,” Carroll said in front of his six-man, three-woman jury. “I thought, well, this might be a way to change the culture of sexual violence.”
After dozens of questions about Tacopina’s failure to scream, Carroll lost patience and raised his voice. “I’m telling you: He raped me whether I screamed or not,” she said.
Trump’s lawyer alleges money motive
Trump’s legal team tried to undermine Carroll’s credibility after she testified in graphic details Wednesday that Trump, now 76, raped her in the Bergdorf dressing room in late 1995 or early 1996 Was.
Tacopina laments Carroll’s inability to remember when the encounter took place, and suggests that she make up the story to create publicity for the memoir, “What Do We Need Men For?”
“For two decades, Ms. carolYou never told the police and never disclosed the story in your hundreds of columns,” Tacopina said.
Carroll admitted that she didn’t shower immediately, see a doctor or call the police, and confided only in her friends Lisa Birnbach and Carol Martin.
She said a sense of shame or fear of retaliation often deters women from reporting rape. Carroll said she also feared Trump would use his wealth against her.
“One of my greatest fears came true,” Carroll said. “There are two tables of his lawyers here today.”
Carroll testified Wednesday that Trump, who was lingerie shopping for another woman at Bergdorf’s, took her into a dressing room, pinned her against a wall and raped her.
Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations and said she made them up to sell her memoir and hurt him politically, a topic Tacopina touched upon.
Trump, 76, leads the Republican field in the 2024 presidential campaign.
He has not attended the trial and is not required to be there. While Carroll testified, Trump was in Manchester, New Hampshire, at a campaign event.
‘Opportunity to be heard’
Carroll, a registered Democrat, is seeking unspecified damages from Trump, saying his refusal ruined her career and invited a flood of online harassment that persists.
She is suing Trump for battery under the Adult Survivors Act, a New York state law of 2022 that allows adults who claim they were sexually abused even after the statute of limitations has expired.
Carroll is suing Trump for defamation in October 2022 over his Truth social platform where he called the rape a hoax and scandal, saying Carroll was “not my type!” and accused Carroll of fabricating a story to sell his memoirs.
On Thursday, before cross-examination, Carroll was questioned by his attorney, Michael Ferrara.
She said that suing Trump was a means of “getting my name back” after being subjected to a “wave of mud” from Trump supporters, and denied doing it for publicity or revenge.
“I love the attention,” she said. “I don’t particularly like drawing attention to suing Donald Trump. It’s hard to draw attention to rape.”
Tacopina is expected to continue cross-examining Carroll when the trial resumes on Monday. The trial is expected to last one to two weeks.
Bernbach, co-author of “The Official Preppy Handbook,” and Martin, a former New York City news anchor, are expected to testify on Carroll’s behalf.
