turkey:

Turkish rescue workers pulled a 45-year-old man from the rubble on Friday, nearly 12 days after a devastating earthquake.

Despite being trapped under the rubble for so long in freezing weather, teams have been searching for survivors throughout the week, although their numbers have dwindled to a handful over the past few days.

A man named Hakan Yasinoglu was rescued 278 hours after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Hatay, a southern province near the Syrian border.

Pictures on social media showed rescue workers carefully carrying a man with a stretcher through the ruins of a flattened building.

To avoid falling, he was tied to a stretcher and covered with a golden-coloured thermal jacket.

He was immediately placed in a waiting ambulance and taken away.

His face could not be seen, and unlike other late rescues where teams cheered or applauded, the mood on the ground seemed somber.

Three more people, including a 14-year-old boy, were rescued late Thursday night and early Friday, with searches continuing round-the-clock at some places.

Turkey’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Friday that rescue operations were ongoing at no less than 200 sites in the region.

The earthquake has killed more than 41,000 people in Turkey and Syria, injured thousands of others and left millions without shelter in freezing temperatures.

Earthquake tremors were felt in 11 provinces of Turkey. Turkish officials have said that rescue operations have been completed in the three provinces of Adana, Kilis and Sanliurfa.
