Twitter considers ‘security incident’ to circle tweets showing it to others: Report – Times of India

Twitter users alleged last month that a ‘Twitter circle’ bug showed their tweets to others outside the circle. Now, nearly a month later, the social media company reportedly acknowledged that the exposure of private tweets was the result of “a security incident that occurred earlier this year.”
Citing an email seen by The Guardian, it reported that Twitter told affected users the tweets to ‘close friends’ were due to “a security incident” – which it claims was “fixed immediately”. It also apologized to the affected users.
“Twitter is committed to protecting the privacy of people who use our service, and we understand the risks that such an incident could present and we are deeply sorry that it happened,” the company said.
Private Tweets exposed to all followers
Last month it was reported that some tweets, which were intended for users in the “Twitter circle”, were shown to people outside the circle. This meant that if you were sharing certain information exclusively on Twitter to certain people, it appeared to others as well. Twitter users have attributed the problem to a bug.
What is twitter circle,
Introduced last year, Twitter Circle is a take on the micro-blogging platform InstagramKey’s ‘Closed Friends’ story feature in which when selected by a user, Tweets will be shared with a “small crowd” – only the followers the user has selected. No one else will see them or even know that there is a story that is not meant for everyone to see.
Additionally, in this case, only people selected for the “close friends” group can interact or reply to posts.
When a ‘Private Post’ (Tweet or Story on Instagram) is posted, it has a green circle to indicate its uniqueness. The green circle is not shown in case of Twitter and those who posted ‘Private’ do‘ Didn’t know if his private tweets were public.
