Elon Musk-run Twitter is testing a new feature – “Notes on Media” – that will make it easier for people to identify potentially misleading media.

The company is experimenting with Community Notes for the media, which will use the site’s crowd-sourced fact checks to provide valuable insight on particular photos and video clips.

“From AI-generated images to doctored videos, misleading media is common. Today we’re rolling out a feature that puts a superpower in the hands of contributors: Notes on Media,” Twitter’s Community Notes tweeted Tuesday.

It says, ‘Notes associated with the image will automatically appear in recent and future matching images.’

Users will see a new option on certain Tweets to mark their notes as “about the image”.

This option can be selected when they believe that the media is potentially misleading in itself, regardless of what the Tweet is depicted in, according to the company.

Furthermore, the microblogging platform said, “Raters and readers will see notes that authors have marked as ‘about the image’ so it is clear to everyone that they should be interpreted as about media, Not as specific Tweets. Ratings can help identify cases where a note may not apply to a specific Tweet”.

Currently, the feature supports tweets with a single image, and the company is working on expanding it to ‘videos’ and ‘tweets with multiple images/videos’.

Furthermore, Twitter acknowledges that it will take some time to perfect its image matching.

“It is currently intended to err on the side of accuracy when matching images, which means it will not match every image that looks like a match to you. We are working to expand coverage while avoiding incorrect matches.” Will work to tune it for the future,” the company said.
