UGD Work in Coimbatore: Residents Face Challenges as Roads are Dug Up | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: Several arterial roads across the city are dug up for underground drainage (UGD) work, as the civic body races against time to complete the work prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Motorists are welcomed with ‘take diversion’ boards at multiple places or made to negotiate a narrow portion of the roads, as the remaining portion is blocked for UGD work. The work, which was hindered all these days due to the monsoon, has gained pace as showers have stopped.
On congested stretches, traffic is being diverted during late night hours to carry out UGD work, so that motorists are not affected during the day.
UGD work in the newly-added areas of the city corporation has also gained pace.
K A Deivanai Thamizhmarai, chairwoman, west zone, said trenches were dug and pipelines were being laid in her zone, which has 10 wards. “However, now the work is being carried out only at 15% of the places. Also, work on two sewage treatment plants, which are part of the UGD project, is yet to begin. “
Speaking about the UGD work on Trichy Road, Ilakummi Izhamselvi, chairwoman, east zone, said about 40% of the work had been completed on the crucial stretch of 3 to 4km. “The pace of work is slow here due to high vehicle movement. Traffic is being diverted to carry out the rest of the work effectively.”
V Kathirvel, chairman, north zone, said the UGD project was sanctioned only in part for wards 14, 15, 1 and 2. “The tentative date to complete the work, which began 20 days ago, is January 2024. But at the current pace, it is sure to prolong until June.”
R Dhanalakshmi, chairwoman, south zone, said eight wards in her zone were included in the UGD scheme. “Work has been completed on a few streets, where roads also have been reliad. In some places, however, work is delayed due to multiple reasons.”
Corporation councillors have urged the civic body to speed up the work further.

Guidelines violated during road repair work in Rbore
Repair and maintenance work in Ranthambore National Park (RNP) violated guidelines of the Forest Conservation Act (FCA), National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), and Tiger Conservation Plan (TCP). The work led to air pollution and was executed in violation of Supreme Court norms. The chief conservator of forest (wildlife) and field director issued orders highlighting the detrimental impact on wildlife habitat, including haphazard mining, widening roads, and dumping debris. The extraction of soil without compaction resulted in high soil dust levels, causing significant air pollution. The orders also held officials responsible for violating Supreme Court norms on road widening in protected areas.
