Ukraine calls EU support for membership ‘historic’ – Times of India

Kyiv ,Ukraine): President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky Friday praised a decision by the European Commission to grant EU candidacy status to Kyiv, nearly four months into Russia’s invasion of the country.
“This is the first step on the EU membership path that will certainly bring our victory closer,” Zelensky wrote on social media, adding that he was “grateful” to the head of the EU. from Ursula Leyen and “A Historic Decision for Every Member of the Election Commission”.
Formal “candidate” status for Ukraine could open a year-long road towards joining the bloc, with the decision formally announced at the EU leaders’ summit on 23-24 June.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dimitro Kuleba in a post on social media described the election commission’s support as “making European history” and called for full candidacy status to Ukraine.
“It will be a vivid testament to European leadership and a great boost to Ukraine’s further changes,” he said.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Sergei Kislitsya, described it on social media as a “truly historic day for Ukraine and Europe”.
He added that many Ukrainians “have already paid the final price” for the European Commission’s support for Kyiv’s EU candidacy status.
