Unauthorized Road Laying Work At Noyyal Stopped | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The water resources department on Saturday stopped an unauthorized road laying work at Noyyal river at Nanjundapuram after facing a strong opposition from the public. Since the road work was taken up by a private contractor without the involvement of any government department, district collector Kranthi Kumar Pati has ordered the water resources department to probe the issue.
There are two bridges across the Noyyal at Nanjundapuram to carry the road and rail traffic. The riverbed between the bridges is being used as a temporary road to reach Vellalore and Mahalingapuram areas.
One of the residents said the riverbed was being used as a shortcut to reach the surrounding areas of Vellalore during summer, when the river would be dry.
On Friday night, another source said, somebody laid a tar road on the way leading to the riverbed. “When we brought it to the knowledge of the district administration on Saturday, they directed the water resources department to stop the illegal work.”
An official with the water resources department said they hadn’t provided any permission to lay the road. “It was not carried out by any government department. A local contractor laid the tar road for around 50 meters on the stretch leading to the river. We have submitted a report to the district collector to take action.”
Another source said the road was laid by a private real estate firm with the oral permission of Vellalore town panchayat to facilitate the township project.
