Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan will lead a Indian delegation To Cannes International Film Festival this year. He will leave for France on Saturday, May 21 and reach there on Sunday, May 22, where he will participate in various events and meetings at the film festival.
Dr. Murugan will walk the red carpet on the opening day wearing the traditional Tamil dress ‘Veshti’ to showcase the rich Indian culture. He will also be accompanied by filmmakers Guneet Monga The Elephant Whispers fame, Miss World 2017 winner Manushi Chillar, Isha Guptaand acclaimed manipuri actor Kangbam TombaWhose restored film ‘Ishanau’ will be screened in the Cannes Classics section this year.
The India Pavilion is being conceptualized and designed by National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad with the theme ‘Showcasing India’s Creative Economy’ to the global community. Pavilion design inspired Saraswati YantraAn abstract representation of Goddess Saraswati, protector of knowledge, music, arts, speech, knowledge and learning. The colors of the mandap take inspiration from the vibrant colors of the national flag of India – saffron, white and green and blue.

Four Indian films have made it to the official selection this year. Kanu Behl’s Agra will be his second film which will have its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. His 2014 debut film Titli was unveiled in the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section. Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy will be screened at midnight screenings and Nehemich will be screened in the La Cinef section of the Festival de Cannes. Ishanhou, a restored Manipuri film, will be screened in the ‘Classics’ section. Apart from these, several Indian films are scheduled to be screened at the Marche du Films.
In addition, a series of interactive sessions will be held at the India Pavilion throughout the festival.
