Former Union Minister and Chairman of the Parliamentary Board of Janata Dal United (JDU) Upendra Kushwaha has left the side of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Kushwaha held a press conference in Patna on Monday and announced his new party Rashtriya Lok Janata Dal along with his resignation from JDU. He will also be its national president.
This is the third time in 18 years, when Upendra Kushwaha has left Nitish’s side. Earlier, he had left Nitish’s side in 2005 and 2013. Kushwaha formed a new party in 2013 after parting ways with Nitish. This is the second time when he announced a new party.
Talking to the media, Kushwaha said – The beginning with Nitish was good, but the end was bad. We cannot become rich by selling our conscience. The path on which Nitish ji is walking is not right for the party. They are looking for their heir in the neighboring house. Kushwaha’s reference was regarding the face of the post of CM in the next assembly.
Let us tell you that on December 13 last year, in the meeting of the MLAs of the Grand Alliance, Nitish Kumar had said that the 2025 assembly elections would be fought under the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav. My target is to defeat BJP in 2024 Lok Sabha elections. I don’t want to be the CM or PM candidate.

Nitish mortgaged the party
Kushwaha said- JDU workers are upset. The Chief Minister did a good job in the beginning, but what he did in the end was not good. When I raised the question in the party, he told me to leave the party. Does Nitish ji have it? He has nothing left now. He mortgaged the party. What share should I ask from them? He has zero in his hand.
Earlier Nitish ji used to take any decision himself. Used to talk to workers and leaders. His own decisions were correct. In today’s date, they don’t take any decision themselves. The Chief Minister is not doing anything of his own free will. They are following the advice of scared people. Nitish ji is walking on the wrong path.
Pain also spilled over from Nitish’s side for not declaring JDU’s successor.

Kushwaha has left Nitish’s side twice before
Upendra Kushwaha has left Nitish Kumar’s side twice before. In the 2005 Bihar assembly elections, when the BJP and JDU-led NDA came to power in Bihar, Kushwaha lost the election from his own seat. After this the distance between Kushwaha and Nitish increased. He left JDU and joined the Nationalist Congress Party.
However, in the year 2010, at the behest of Nitish, Kushwaha returned home. Upendra once again came to JDU, but did not stay together for long.
In March 2013, just before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Upendra Kushwaha formed his new party Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP). In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he also gave his support to NDA. His party contested elections on three Lok Sabha seats in Bihar and won all the three seats. In its reward, he got a place in the Modi cabinet and became the Minister of State for Human Resources.
By the year 2018, Kushwaha’s party collapsed. Then he went with Tejashwi Yadav in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but did not get a single seat. Then he merged his party with JDU on 14 March 2021.
Kushwaha has contested elections 9 times so far
Upendra Kushwaha contested elections 9 times in his entire political career. He has won the election only twice. For the first time, he became an MLA in 2000 as a Samta Party candidate by winning from Jandaha assembly seat in Vaishali district.
At the same time, Upendra Kushwaha became a Member of Parliament for the second time by winning the Karakat seat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Apart from this, he became a Rajya Sabha MP in 2010 and became a member of the Legislative Council in 2021. Although there is definitely a record in the name of Upendra Kushwaha that he has been a member of all the four houses.
