Uproar over name change in Tamil Nadu Assembly; DMK allies stage walkout, Guv Ravi walks out during CM Stalin’s speech

This happened after a speech by the Governor at a felicitation ceremony at the Raj Bhavan on 4 January, in which Ravi reportedly remarked that Thamizhagam was a more appropriate name for Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly session this year began with ruckus and sloganeering as the Governor vs DMK government controversy escalated. Several leaders staged a walkout as Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi began his speech in the assembly.

Allies of the ruling DMK, including the Congress and the MDMK, reportedly boycotted the Governor’s address by staging a massive walkout. The protest comes amid a host of issues, including the latest on renaming Tamil Nadu. This happened after a speech by the Governor at a felicitation ceremony at the Raj Bhavan on 4 January, in which Ravi reportedly remarked that Thamizhagam was a more appropriate name for Tamil Nadu.

The DMK and its allies have strongly opposed Ravi’s stand, accusing him of following the ideological position of the BJP. Both Tamizhgam and Tamil Nadu roughly mean ‘the land of the Tamils’. The BJP has supported Ravi on the Tamizhgam controversy. After the DMK came to power in 1967, the erstwhile Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu.

The DMK and its allies have also alleged that there are several bills which are pending with the Governor which has added to the tension. Several leaders in the state assembly raised slogans against the governor. National opposition to DMK Education When it comes to policy matters, the Raj Bhavan policy and those who stake money on it are among the friction points.

Meanwhile, the governor also walked out of the assembly after CM Stalin’s speech. CM Stalin during his speech said that it is really sad that the Tamil Nadu government’s report was ignored without weighing it against the policy. He proposed a motion to remove the governor’s words from the notes of the House in protest of what had been printed. After this the Governor got down from his seat and went away.

The DMK and the governor have been at loggerheads for months with the Stalin-led government even seeking a memorandum demanding the governor’s withdrawal.

The uproar also came amid a political standoff between the AIADMK and the BJP after a ruling party MLA linked the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa to the BJP.
