Prayagraj: The health benefits of morning walk are beyond doubt. Now, the family of a banker from Prayagraj will take a vow that it saves lives too.
On a morning walk on Monday, a doctor found the banker collapsed in his car and his family was pleading for help.
Being a neurosurgeon, he anticipated the seriousness of the condition and administered Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) before taking him to a nearby hospital. The banker is now recovering in the hospital.
Santosh Kumar, 40, manager of Bank of Baroda South Malka branch, had gone to his school near Heera Halwai Crossing to attend the Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) of his daughter Rabhya Vats. Soon after he parked the car and turned off the engine, he lost consciousness while his pulse began to slow down.
It was a matter of good fortune for Santosh and his family that Dr Prakash Khaitan, the city’s eminent neurosurgeon, was on his morning walk and passing through at the crucial time. Seeing the family in trouble, he stopped.
Dr Khaitan found Santosh lying unconscious in the driving seat of his car and immediately gave him CPR to regain consciousness. CPR ensures that blood and oxygen continue to flow when a person’s heart and breathing slow down or simply stop.
“We had come to attend the PTM of my daughter who is in 5th standard. My husband had stopped the car and was trying to take out the key, when his hand became hard, his body became immovable and through his mouth The saliva started flowing.” Santosh’s wife Surbhi told TOI.
“My daughter and I started crying for help and urged people around us to do something, but no one came to know. Suddenly, a middle-aged man came forward and asked the audience to step back saying that he was a doctor. They examined my husband and noticed that he was not breathing, he started giving CPR. My husband regained consciousness after a few minutes. The ‘Pari’ who saved my husband was renowned neurosurgeon Dr Prakash Khaitan,’ recalled Surbhi.
Dr Khaitan and his colleague rushed Santosh to a nearby hospital where he was admitted and is normal.
“My friend Dr. Sonkar and I were on our way back from morning walk when we saw a mother-daughter duo crying. We stopped our car and rushed to help. The man had suffered a stroke and needed CPR and massage. I continued with CPR and after 10 minutes my breath of contentment came back. We then took him to a nearby private hospital and admitted him to the ICU,” said Dr Khaitan.
Surbhi said that Santosh was healthy and had never had high blood pressure, but when he was about 15 years old, his right side was paralyzed, but was completely cured in about a week of medication.
Surbhi, a housewife, said, “It was our good fortune that the renowned neurosurgeon came to rescue my husband, who is now treating him.”
The incident also proved the importance of the golden hour of stroke and the importance of people knowing how to administer CPR, a life-saving technique.
