Dharwad: The Foundation Day of Vanita Seva Samaj (VSS) in Dharwad will be observed at the Sannidhi hall on JSS College premises on February 4 (Sunday) at noon. Union minister for parliamentary affairs Pralhad Joshi will inaugurate the programme. Managing director of Swarna Group of Companies TVSV Prasad will be the chief guest. Deputy leader of the opposition in the assembly Arvind Bellad will release the book ‘Maayi’.Sadashivanand Swami of Gadag will grace the occasion. VSS president Topanagouda Patil will preside.
Vanita Seva Samaj was established in 1928 with the selfless efforts of Bhagirathibai Puranik who was working for the rehabilitation of women who were abandoned by their husbands or in-laws or those who had become widows at a young age. Bhagirathibai, who had experienced the trauma at a young age, had vowed to strive to aid these helpless women lead a decent, dignified, self-reliant life. She established Vanita Seva Samaj which has been serving the poor, orphans, underprivileged and exploited women. She also started vocational training for women so that they could become financially independent.
Over the years, VSS has expanded its horizon of activities and is imparting education from pre-primary to pre-university and DEd courses for girls mostly from economically and socially weak backgrounds.
The book ‘Maayi’ records Bhagirathibai’s determination, hard work, sacrifice and success in empowering the underprivileged women and the path traversed by Vanita Seva Samaj over the last 96 years. Dr Anand Patil and CU Bellakki have written the book, which has been translated into English by Arunkumar Habbu. Sharanamma Gorebal will speak about the book.
