Varun Dhawan is winning hearts on the internet with his “brutally honest” acceptance speech at the News18 Showsha Reel Awards, where he was named the Best Actor for his earnest performance in Nitesh Tiwari’s Bawaal. Varun was nominated alongside Shah Rukh Khan (Pathaan and Jawan), Ranbir Kapoor (Animal and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar), Sunny Deol (Gadar 2), Salman Khan (Tiger 3), Ranveer Singh (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani) and Vicky Kaushal (Sam Bahadur).
In Bawaal, Varun plays the role of a self-obsessed high school History teacher who is in a strained marriage. His compelling portrayal earned him much love and appreciation from his fans. And now, the actor has sent them into meltdown once again by giving a moving speech while accepting the Best Actor honour for the film.
“When the nominations were announced, Bhushanji (Kumar) very sweetly told me that tum hi jeet rahe ho isliye toh aaye ho (you are only winning it because that’s why you have come),” Varun jokes as he begins his speech.
Varun continued, “When I was informed about my nomination and told that this was a popular choice and there would be public voting, so I got extremely excited thinking that I could win this. But when I saw the nominations, I couldn’t believe it that someone would vote for me more than Sunny (Deol) sir and Salman (Khan) bhai. My vote will go to them for Gadar 2 and Tiger 3. But Bawaal is a very special movie in my life. I think when it was released, it was met with a lot of controversies. People had a lot of mixed response to it that it was politically correct or incorrect. But as the year ended, it became one of the most watched movies on OTT. It got 22.6 million views which is huge. The reason why I’m saying this is now we know that the movie has stood the test of time.”
Several videos of Varun’s acceptance speech from the News18 Showsha Reel Awards have gone viral on social media, with fans praising the actor for his honesty in the speech. One user wrote, “This is the most brutally honest award acceptance speech, I can’t BELIEVE Varun said all of this on stage, it’s good that he called out.” Another one wrote, “He is the best best choice for mid budget enjoyable Bollywood movies. Baby John, that dharma rom com with Shashank are all in that direction I’m glad.”
On the work front, Varun will next be seen in Atlee’s production Baby John. The film also features Keerthy Suresh and Wamiqa Gabbi.
