Pune: A 26-year-old suspect, arrested by Pune Police Crime Branch officials in connection with vehicle theft cases, was found hanging from an iron bar in one of the enclosures of Pune Police’s Central Lockup Facility. Vishrambaug police station Station, early Wednesday morning.
Lockup is one of the larger common facilities of Pune Police where suspects arrested by various police units are kept in custody to overcome their own location issues.
Police claimed that the deceased Shivaji Garad was found hanging from an iron rod inside the enclosure with a torn blanket folded into a rope.
25 other suspects were also staying in the same enclosure, with whom Garad continued talking till about midnight. Police claimed that none of these suspects could explain how the death happened. There was no guard to keep a watch on the activities in the lockup enclosure. Only two guards at the main gate take a round every hour and a half to check the enclosures.
The death occurred between Tuesday midnight and Wednesday morning.
While the police is calling it a case of suicide, a team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reached the lockup on Wednesday morning to investigate the custodial death.
