Vikram Bhatt opens up about Aamir Khan and Mahesh Bhatt’s fallout | – Times of India

Rani Mukerji made her acting debut with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat in 1997, but it was the 1998 film Ghulam that brought her widespread attention and critical acclaim. Directed by Vikram Bhatt and starring Aamir Khan in the lead role, Rani portrayed the character of Alisha, a vivacious and independent woman who falls in love with Aamir’s character Siddharth Marathe. However, Rani was deeply hurt when her voice was dubbed by a professional voice artist in the film. Now, the director has addressed the controversy surrounding it.
When Vikram was asked about dubbing Rani’s voice in Ghulam, mentioning that the makers found her voice not suitable for the audience, he told Siddharth Kannan that it was him who had suggested Rani to be cast in the film. He had seen her work in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and he was impressed by her performance.
“Someone told me ‘that film did not work, people did not like her voice and thought it was weird.’ I said, ‘Voice can be dubbed, the girl is a good actor and even looks good.’ So sometimes these things stick and no one thinks a lot. What we thought before casting, we did it. There was no conscious effort behind this. We laugh about it. She knows I would not do anything like that to her,” Vikram explained.

He also recalled Aamir and Mahesh Bhatt‘s fallout after Ghulam was released. He revealed that when Aamir and Mahesh parted ways on the sets, Aamir told Mahesh that he wants Ghulam to be the most important thing in his life. To which, Mahesh replied, ‘It cannot be. This is not the most important thing for me.’
“Both of them were very honest. For me it was important because I only had Fareeb at that time and so I had a lot of fun. If today Aamir says, ‘I want you to do Ghulam and I want it to be the most important thing,’ I will say it cannot be,” Vikram added.

When the filmmaker was asked about his equation with Aamir, he said that they are in touch, adding that the superstar attended his daughter Krishna Bhatt’s wedding. He also said that they speak on phone sometimes and that’s how they have maintained their relationship.
Ghulam not only proved to be a commercial success but also helped Rani carve a niche for herself in the film industry. Her on-screen chemistry with Aamir was well-received, which ultimately contributed to the film’s success. It also opened doors to more prominent opportunities and Rani went on to become one of the leading actresses in Bollywood.
